World Peacock Day 15th November, 2025

The 2025 celebration will center on the theme of “Honoring India’s National Bird in Our Ecosystems”, highlighting the peacock’s ecological role, its relationship with rural landscapes, and ways to mitigate human-peafowl conflict.

About

World Sparrow Day 2025

  1. Establishment of Sparrow Conservation Sites

IBCS collaborated with schools and religious institutions to set up dedicated Sparrow Conservation Sites. These sites included the installation of nest boxes and feeders to provide safe habitats for sparrows. The following methods were followed:

  1. Selection of a Sparrow Conservation Site: it was a school/college campus, market place or religious place
  2. Organized Awareness Campaign: talk about sparrows, threats to them, their role in ecosystem and need of conservation
  3. Installed 50 nest boxes for Sparrows: wooden, earthen, cardboard or from any other eco-friendly material
  4. Planted 15 Sparrow-Friendly Plants: thorny, bushy like bouganvillea, mehendi, gudhal, rose, madhumalti, chandni
  5. Kept 5 pots for water
  6. Created a feeding site

Awareness Sessions and Workshops

Educational sessions were conducted in schools and NSS Camps, highlighting the reasons behind the decline of the sparrow population and ways to support their conservation. Experts from the field shared insights on urban biodiversity and sustainable living practices. Special interactive sessions were held where students and volunteers discussed the impact of urbanization, pollution, and habitat destruction on sparrow populations. Demonstrations on eco-friendly practices, such as reducing pesticide use and creating safe nesting spaces, were also part of these sessions.

Additionally, hands-on workshops were conducted to teach students how to make nest boxes using eco-friendly and easily available materials like wooden planks, coconut shells, and clay pots. The participants actively engaged in crafting these boxes, which were later installed in schools and community centers,

  1. Student Engagement and Competitions

To encourage student participation, various competitions such as poster-making, essay writing, and quiz contests on sparrow conservation were organized. Winners were awarded certificates and eco-friendly gifts.

Community Involvement and Pledge

Residents and volunteers took a pledge to support sparrow conservation by installing bird feeders, reducing pesticide use, preparing and distributing nest boxes, and spreading awareness in their localities. A special photo exhibition was also organized, showcasing images of sparrows, conservation efforts, and community participation. This exhibition helped engage the public and highlighted the importance of protecting sparrows in urban and rural environments.

. Internship Program

IBCS launched an internship program for students interested in Sparrow conservation. The program provided an opportunity for interns to engage in practical conservation work, combining fieldwork with research and awareness initiatives. Interns actively participated in field surveys to monitor sparrow populations, engaged with communities to spread awareness, and assisted in habitat restoration efforts such as setting up nest boxes and plantation of native plants.

In addition, interns received mentorship from conservation experts and gained hands-on experience in sparrow documentation, environmental education, and sustainable conservation strategies. Regular interactive sessions were conducted to enhance their understanding of sparrow ecology and its management. Through this internship, interns developed skills in research, advocacy, and community engagement, preparing them for future roles in House sparrow conservation.

Impact and Outreach

  • Over 20 schools and 5 religious institutions actively participated in the initiative.
  • More than 5000 students and community members engaged in the conservation activities.
  • 50+ sparrow-friendly plants were planted across different locations.
  • 2000+ nest boxes and feeders were installed at various conservation sites.
  • Internship opportunities provided to 15+ interns to contribute to sparrow conservation efforts

The World Sparrow Day 2025 celebration by Indian Biodiversity Conservation Society was a successful initiative that strengthened community awareness and engagement in sparrow conservation. The collaborative efforts between schools, religious places, and environmental enthusiasts created a positive impact, setting an example for long-term conservation actions. Moving forward, IBCS aims to expand this initiative to more locations, ensuring a sustainable future for the sparrow population while continuing to offer meaningful internship opportunities to young conservationists.
